Basil is a formerly successful Beverly Hills businessman who has fallen upon hard times. He travels to Denver to purchase foreclosed properties so he can sell them on for a profit. He is collected from the airport by his driver, Nicky, a recovering alcoholic. The conditions are hazardous, so Nicky and Basil stop at a tiny mountain bar. Basil flirts with the barmaid and Nicky, overcome with contempt, scuppers his chances by loudly referring to Basil’s wife and kids. The men return to the car, barely speaking. In spite of the weather, Basil demands that Nicky drives on and the car spins off the road. Neither man is hurt but the car is stuck in the snow. There is insufficient petrol to keep the engine running, but the men fall asleep with it switched on and Basil awakens, freezing. He feels sure it must nearly be morning; it is only 23:15. He trudges into the night, hopeful he can make his way back to the town, and his spirits soar as he spots its lights. He quickly discovers he has come full circle and he is actually seeing the light from the car. He gets in and huddles together with Nicky and sleeps. In the morning light, as the rescuers approach, Basil lies frozen and dead, and on top of him is Nicky, barely - but still - alive.
Based on Master And Man by War And Peace and Anna Karenina writer, Leo Tolstoy, Boxing Day will be the third film in a loose trilogy of modern day interpretations of Tolstoy short novels which started with Ivans Xtc and The Kreutzer Sonata.
